About
British singer Laura Mvula recently graced the NPR Music Tiny Desk concert with her captivating performance, showcasing her soulful pop sound enriched with intricate layers of music that transcend genres and eras. Mvula, known for her boundless sonic ambition, delivered an intimate three-song set with a small string section, opting for brooding ballads from her debut album "Sing to the Moon" over her flashier tracks like "Like the Morning Dew" and "Green Garden." The artist's background includes a classical training and experience in a cappella, jazz/neo-soul, and gospel groups.
Laura Mvula's career highlights include the release of her critically acclaimed debut album "Sing to the Moon" in 2013, which garnered her two MOBO awards and a Mercury Prize nomination. Her second album, "The Dreaming Room" (2016), also received critical acclaim and earned her an Ivor Novello award, as well as another Mercury Prize nomination. Not only known for her music, but Mvula also wrote the music for the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2017 production of Antony & Cleopatra. In addition to her music career, Mvula received an honorary doctorate of music from Birmingham City University in 2018.
